When should orthodontic treatment be instituted?

The earliest an initial assessment can be made is when all the milk teeth have broken through. In exceptional cases, the first indications of the treatment required may be apparent at this stage.

As a general rule, the need for treatment should be assessed when the child is between seven and ten years of age.

Treatment designed to influence the development of dentition is usually initiated between the ages of 9 and 14 years.

Treatment aiming to correct malpositioning of the teeth is indicated after the breakthrough of the permanent teeth, between 12 and 16 years of age.
